HKFWS is committed to enhancing family wellbeing. The Society helps families to understand the status of their family wellbeing by conducting socially relevant and culturally appropriate research such as the Hong Kong Family Wellbeing Index. Based on their own research, we have created an online self-assessment tool covering six family domains that enable anyone to benchmark their own family wellbeing to further understand their own family situation. We also provide professional advice to enhance the family wellbeing of the general public.

How do we create quality family time amid the hustle and bustle of life?


Conflicts often arise from differences in lifestyle, values, daily routines and eating habits. However, "Quality Family Time" can forestall the emergence of such discord.

The meaning of "Quality Family Time"

To cultivate quality family time, we must understand what "quality family time" means. Family members can enjoy quality family time when they are not disturbed by external affairs and feel intimate in how they connect to each other. It doesn't matter how long the time is, as long as everyone enjoys the process, communicates and feels loved, these relaxed and happy moments become cherished memories.

Companionship and Sharing

Creating “quality family time” is easy, it revolves around companionship and sharing, such as listening to each other's daily routines or having a meal together with full attention. We encourage you to put down your mobile phone and spend time with your family over a meal. You can talk about daily chores and share your thoughts and feelings with each other. This will help you to understand each family member's needs and interests so as to build a strong relationship with families.

Establish family traditions

We encourage you to establish family traditions. It represents your own family culture. For example, allocate 10 to 20 minutes for shared activities, such as enjoying food, talking daily chores, watching a favorite TV show and playing a game on a designated weekly day, with all family members put aside their phones, chores, or work-related tasks. In addition, you might arrange a monthly family excursion or celebrate important days and holidays with festive gatherings such as birthdays and Christmas. These traditions represent a commitment to nurturing quality time and deepening familiarity with one another's habits and predilections.

Quality "Playtime with Children"

A quality "playtime" is essential for a family to foster intimacy and happiness. Parents might allocate thirty to forty-five minutes each week for parent-child activities, allowing children to direct the play. Simultaneously, parents can gain insight into their children's inner sentiments so as communicate effectively with your child.

Quality multi-generational family time

For cultivate quality multi-generational family time, you can arrange a teatime on holidays. Furthermore, we encourage the elderly to use communication apps to keep in touch with family members. Since the expressions of appreciation and gratitude are difficult to convey in person, but it’s easy to express through communication software.

There is no standard answer for creating "Quality Family Time". The key lies in wholehearted dedication and unwavering focus on one's family. Grandiosity or complexity are unnecessary, even simple daily activities or conversations can serve to strengthen our connections with each other.
