Family Wellbeing

HKFWS is committed to enhancing family wellbeing. The Society helps families to understand the status of their family wellbeing by conducting socially relevant and culturally appropriate research such as the Hong Kong Family Wellbeing Index. Based on their own research, we have created an online self-assessment tool covering six family domains that enable anyone to benchmark their own family wellbeing to further understand their own family situation. We also provide professional advice to enhance the family wellbeing of the general public.

My girlfriend and I just got married and recently relocated to a new home where the living environment is overcrowded. How can we create a good living environment and make our life comfortable?

A comfortable living environment can lead to a sense of relaxation and calmness, which can help reduce anxiety levels and contribute to a healthy and joyful life. Therefore, creating a congenial living environment assumes paramount importance, particularly when the living environment is overcrowded.

1. Home design

To create a favorable living environment, you can start with interior design. For example, you can place a mirror in an appropriate position, which will make you feel as if the living space has been enlarged. In limited space, we can use storage solutions such as hooks, storage baskets, and shelves to maximise storage space. Additionally, choosing furniture with multiple functions, such as a sofa bed or an ottoman storage which provide an extra storage. This can help you create a good living environment and make your life comfortable.

2. Calming colours

One of the most important ways to create a relaxing space is through colour. You can choose harmonious and calming colours such as beige, grey, green and white to create a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere in a room. By incorporating colorful accessories or artwork, it can create a cosy and inviting atmosphere.

3. Clean and clear

Maintaining a clean and uncluttered home is vital to sustain a spacious and orderly environment. Regardless of the size of your living space, a decluttered space helps create a relaxing and comfortable atmosphere. It is also important to conduct deep cleaning regularly   to make the environment look tidy and refreshing.

4. Comfortable and bright lighting

A good lighting not only enhances the brightness of the space, but also creates a comfortable atmosphere. Therefore, choosing soft lighting fixtures such as wall lamps, table lamps, and floor lamps can elevate the lighting effect. Moreover, we can use warm color temperatures to create a cosy and inviting living environment.

5. Adding personalised elements

Adding personalised decorative elements can make the living environment more individualised and warm. For example, displaying family photos, hanging artwork or travel collectibles into home decor which can make the space more personal and warm.

6. Curtail clutter

Sometimes the living environment is overcrowded because of one’s material desires, which makes people consume irrationally and lead to an excess of sundries accumulated at homes. Therefore, we must know how to consume rationally. Only buying what is needed and knowing how to "declutter" is crucial. We must decisively discard or pass on unnecessary and useless items to those in need.

Quality of life is not determined by the size of the living area. Spiritual support should also be considered. Couples may wish to spend the holiday together to participate in outdoor activities, go to the countryside to breathe fresh air, enjoy the natural scenery, or develop various interests. All of these can improve the quality of life for you and your wife.
